Who Needs ABA Services? Signs It Is Time to Call
When people hear about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), they often associate it strictly with autism diagnoses or “fixing” bad behavior. However, the scope of this therapy is much wider. Finding the right ABA services in Las Vegas is not just about reducing tantrums. It is about teaching the functional skills necessary for a happy, independent life.
At Let’s Talk! Therapy Center, we view behavior as a form of communication. When a child or teen acts out, they are often trying to tell us something they cannot express with words. Waiting for a child to “grow out of” aggressive or rigid behaviors often leads to increased stress for the entire family. Here are four clear indicators that it might be time for an evaluation with our specialized team.
Note: If you are unsure, trust your gut. A professional screening at our center can provide peace of mind.
1. Safety Concerns (Aggression or Self-Injury)
This is the most urgent reason families seek help. If behaviors are causing physical harm to the individual or others, immediate intervention is necessary to keep everyone safe.
- The Sign: Frequent hitting, biting, head-banging, or running away (elopement) when frustrated or overwhelmed.
- For Kids: Throwing toys at siblings, biting themselves when denied a treat, or running into the street without looking.
- For Teens/Adults: Property destruction (punching walls), self-harm, or physical aggression toward caregivers when asked to complete a non-preferred task.
2. Significant Communication Deficits
While Speech Therapy teaches how to say words, ABA teaches why to use them. Many behavioral issues stem from the frustration of not being able to ask for wants and needs.
- The Sign: Acting out physically instead of using words or gestures to communicate desires.
- For Kids: Screaming or dropping to the floor to get a toy instead of pointing or asking. Pulling a parent by the hand without making eye contact.
- For Teens/Adults: Grunting or shutting down when frustrated instead of asking for a break. Difficulty engaging in back-and-forth conversation despite having the vocabulary to do so.
3. Difficulty with Transitions or Rigidity
We all like routines, but an inability to handle small changes can make daily life impossible. ABA helps build flexibility and tolerance for the unexpected.
- The Sign: Extreme distress or meltdowns when a routine is altered or when a specific ritual is interrupted.
- For Kids: Tantrums lasting more than 15 minutes because the driving route to school changed, or needing to line up toys in a specific order before playing.
- For Teens/Adults: Refusal to participate in family events if the schedule changes slightly, or extreme anxiety when a preferred item is not available.
4. Deficits in Adaptive Living Skills
The ultimate goal of ABA is independence. If a child or teen is significantly behind their peers in self-care tasks, behavior analysis can break these skills down into teachable steps.
- The Sign: Relying on caregivers for basic tasks that should be age-appropriate.
- For Kids: Inability to use the toilet, difficulty feeding themselves with utensils, or unable to dress themselves despite having the physical ability to do so.
- For Teens/Adults: Unable to complete a morning hygiene routine without constant verbal prompting, or difficulty managing money and basic chores.
